If tired looking eyes are a constant problem for you, you might be surprised to learn how many simple tricks there are to curing them.

Though there’s an endless supply of store bought products that claim to work, not all of them do. For the ones that do work however, it’s usually in the double digit dollar range- which gets to be annoying after a while.

While I normally wouldn’t complain about a product that worked, even if it were pricey, I just can’t wrap my head around fancy smancy eye gels/creams when I know there are cheaper alternatives.

Which leads me to the main topic: natural puffy eye remedies.

If a calmer eye area is what you’re searching for, look no further than your own kitchen…and/or the grocery store to pick up a few things you may need.

Puffy Eye Remedies

1. Cucumbers

The age old trick of using cucumber slices to de-puff eyes is one that really works. All you need is 1 chilled cucumber, which you can get for less than a dollar, a relaxing place to lay back, and a few minutes to spare.

Cucumbers are made up of mostly water and contain natural antioxidants that are believed to help with irritation. Once chilled and applied to the eye area, its coolness will help reduce swelling.

Try this method for 5 minutes at a time, and once you’re done you can make something yummy with the left overs, like our Greek Cucumber Salad.

2. Milk Compress

If you’ve ever heard of drinking milk after eating something extremely spicy to stop the burning sensation, the same theory applies to swollen eyes.

Using 2 cotton pads (which can be found in any store’s health and beauty aisle) dip them in a glass of cold milk, preferably non-skim. Next, give them a slight squeeze to drain excess milk and apply pads directly to the clean eye area for up to 15 minutes.

The ingredients in milk such as protein, amino and lactic acids is what helps to soothe and de-puff swollen eyes, according to dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD.

After you’ve finished soaking your eyes with the milk compresses be sure to wash your entire face thoroughly.

3. Cold Spoons

Perhaps the easiest and cheapest way to treat puffy eyes is by chilling spoons in either the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes or in the freezer for half that time.

Using spoons is especially ideal for skin directly below the eye, since the coolness of the steel will instantaneously help reduce swelling. Just be careful and take your time when applying them to the eye area.

What’s even better about this remedy is that it’s absolutely free, since I’m sure everyone owns at least two spoons.
